COVER
Tori's MMA career was taking off, until she beat the wrong man. Her training partner, nursing a bruised ego, snapped—shattering her trust and confidence. Three years later, Tori’s keeping her fists to herself as she struggles to put herself through college. But when a group of gangbangers hassle her at work, old habits kick in and her fists fly. Max Estrada, a frequent diner customer, steps in and gets them out of hot water, but Tori is still fired... days before tuition is due. With no other option, she’s forced to take a desk job at her old pounding grounds, where her demons still haunt the cage and the temptation to go glove-to-glove with familiar pro-fighter, Max Estrada, is too much. The sexy Colombian draws her back into the world of MMA and revives her dreams of becoming a professional face-puncher—until Will, her old partner and current Middleweight Champion, struts back into the gym. The secret they share is an unexpected liability to his career, and he's determined to keep her silent. With her life on the ropes, Tori will have to face the past for a shot at winning back her future, or carry the weight of a loss even greater than before.

My hand trailed down his arm, and his pulse jumped under the warm skin on his wrist. His wrist slipped out from under my fingers, and his hand clamped around mine.
When had he moved closer? I looked up. His face was only inches away.
"And the scar on your eyebrow?" I asked. I reached up, and ran my fingertip over the jagged skin partially hidden in his eyebrow.
"A fight."
"The one by your ear?" I touched that one, too. He leaned into my hand.
"A fight." His voice grew quieter.
"The one on your chest?" Even though he had a shirt on, I knew he had a scar there. I pressed my hand against his chest. His heart rate sped up, and feeling it under my flat palm relaxed me.
"Trying to jump a fence when I was little."
"Before your ninja skills?" I said.
"Before my ninja skills."
His gaze felt heavy. I titled my head back, and our eyes locked. His pupils constricted; his chest raised quicker and quicker. My hand fisted his shirt. I wanted so badly to reach out and kiss him.
"And you? This one?" His hand brushed against my hair; his fingers trailed the scar at my temple.
My skin tingled under his touch, and warm arrows shot down my cheek, down my throat. When had it gotten so hot in here?
His question registered in my muddled brain. Between that and wanting to kiss him, I did the only thing I could think of. I threw a double jab, putting distance between us, followed by a cross with my fight hand.
He slipped the cross, and this time sent one of his own back. I slipped it, went in for a hook, but he moved. Still in close. As I grabbed his neck and yanked him forward, I sent out a right Thai knee, angling my hips open, landing my knee rib level. He grabbed my thigh, and wrapped his arm underneath it.
I tightened my arms, and prepared for punches or to be dropped to the mat. Instead, he yanked me forward, and my stomach, bare from where my tank top had rolled up, hit his. I dropped my arms, surprised. He stared at me; we were so close now. He no longer held my thigh. His arm wrapped around my back, his palm against the area above my butt, and I pressed my body tighter against him.
I felt the movement before he hooked his foot around my ankle and yanked. I was already off balance, but I didn't even try to stay up. I fell, him on top of me, one arm around my back and the other hand cradling my head.
At first, the movement confused me. He knocked me down all the time and never seemed overly concerned about my head.
With my back on the mat, his fingers touched my hair and trailed down my cheek, my jaw, my neck. Hot skin pressed against my abs. Leather and sweat mixed with Max engulfed me.
With one hand resting on my neck, he kissed me.

Publication date: September 7, 2014
Genres: New Adult, Romance, Suspense

Synopsis:
The day my life took an inevitable detour things got a little crazy.

My name is Essalin Brant, but everyone calls me Essa. I attend a small college in a tiny town, and in my twenty-two years of life I’ve never even traveled outside the state of Pennsylvania. You could say my life is pretty boring. I live by the rules. I’m a good girl and nothing exciting ever happens.
But that’s all about to change.
Enter Farren Shaw. Not only is he older and intimidating, but he’s more sure of himself than any 29-year-old man has a right to be. Did I mention that he’s drop-dead gorgeous? Well, he is. He also happens to be my best friend Haven’s brother. And I would be content with just fantasizing about Farren from afar, but when Haven suddenly goes missing, her gorgeous brother is the only one who believes me when I say she was abducted, even though all signs seem to suggest Haven left town willingly.
I know better, though. As does Farren. So when he asks me to accompany him to search for his sister, I accept.
That’s when the real adventure begins.
Our quest to find Haven takes us across the country. And throughout the time we spend together, I find myself falling for Farren . . . falling hard. He’s everything I’ve ever wanted. But is he really someone I should fear?
Because aside from making me feel things I’ve never felt before, Farren is hiding something. Something big. What could this stunning man be keeping from me? And why? Is Haven’s disappearance somehow connected to his mysterious job?
All I know is that things are about to get real.
Welcome to the Inevitable Detour that has become my life.

Four Stars

I really liked this historical-romance novella a lot. I have a fascination with this time and place, which is England in 1542. Henry VIII had lost his beloved queen, Jane Seymour, and he is now entertaining options for another wife. He summons the Lady Annabelle Benton-Hayes to court. Sweet tension quickly arises when Rafe de Vere, the soldier sent to take her to His Majesty, also happens to be the very man she loved before he went away to war.

This is a short tale of the forbidden kind of love. It’s established right away what had happened with Annabelle and Rafe while they were away from each other’s presence and what they long for in their lives. I adored them so much that it made me cheer them on for their second chance from the very beginning; however, because of the situation, the possibility of them together may never be.

I think Nicola Davidson captured Henry VIII’s mercurial temperament perfectly! His mood is so hot and cold, but she even made me feel a little sorry for the guy. I loved the character of Gerda and her unexpected candor. This story is short, sweet, and steamy with heart-pounding twists. I’ll definitely check out Ms. Davidson’s future stories!

About the author:
I worked for many years in media and local government, but haven't looked back since deciding writing wicked, Regency and Tudor-set historical romance was infinitely more fun!

When not chained to my computer, I can be found ambling along one of New Zealand's beautiful beaches, belting out 80's power ballads or cheering on the champion All Blacks rugby team. If these activities include chocolate - even better!

Me Before You by Jojo Moyes #Review

Title: Me Before You
Author: Jojo Moyes
Published: December 31, 2012

Synopsis:
They had nothing in common until love gave them everything to lose . . .

Louisa Clark is an ordinary girl living an exceedingly ordinary life—steady boyfriend, close family—who has barely been farther afield than their tiny village. She takes a badly needed job working for ex–Master of the Universe Will Traynor, who is wheelchair bound after an accident. Will has always lived a huge life—big deals, extreme sports, worldwide travel—and now he’s pretty sure he cannot live the way he is.

Will is acerbic, moody, bossy—but Lou refuses to treat him with kid gloves, and soon his happiness means more to her than she expected. When she learns that Will has shocking plans of his own, she sets out to show him that life is still worth living.

A Love Story for this generation, Me Before You brings to life two people who couldn’t have less in common—a heartbreakingly romantic novel that asks, What do you do when making the person you love happy also means breaking your own heart?

Five Stars

Live Life Boldly. Live Life Fully.

I’ve been meaning to read this book for a long while. A few months ago a very dear friend and I even planned to buddy read this book, but things got hectic, and she ended up reading this before me. Then she kept nudging me to read it. Well, a few days ago I finally took the plunge…WOW! What a brilliant, touching story!

Will Traynor’s family hire Louisa Clark to be his caregiver. Will is a 35 year old quadriplegic who is severely depressed, and his family really wants Louisa to be his companion, someone who can be his friend and maybe uplift his spirits a bit. Boy, does she have her work cut out for her. Will doesn’t make it easy for Lou at all. What I loved about Lou is that she’s spunky and super determined. She’s exactly what Will needs, but is it enough? A friendship blossoms and the romance is slowly built in such a beautiful way. Spending time with Will ultimately impacts her life, too, in a huge way.

I didn’t read any reviews prior to reading Me Before You. I had no idea the story was going to dive deep into a controversial topic. I think Ms. Moyes did a wonderful job presenting different aspects and emotions in this controversy and how the disabled are continually treated and viewed.  She made me FEEL all the good and bad parts. Yes, the sad parts were literally gut-wrenching to read, but the story is also uplifting as well. Thinking back to chapter 15, who knew that Lou was such a rebel!

“You only get one life. It’s actually your duty to live it as fully as possible”

I read the epilogue three times and each time I couldn’t get through it without tears filling my eyes. Me Before You has quickly become one of my all-time favorite reads and will truly stay with me for a very long time. Little did I know that Will and Lou would worm their way into my heart, that their story would serve as a kind reminder to live life boldly and fully.
