Release Day Blitz: I'll Be Home For Christmas by Jessica Scott Excerpt & Giveaway!

November 5, 2013; Forever Yours/E-Novella; $0.99; 978-1-4555-5424-9
There's nothing in the world Army Sergeant Vic Carponti loves more than his wife and his country. Smart-mouthed and easy tempered, he takes everything as a joke . . . except his promise to come home to his wife, Nicole, for Christmas. As he prepares to leave for his latest deployment into Iraq, Vic will do everything he can to shield his beautiful, supportive wife from the realities of war . . . and from his own darkest fears.

As a career army wife, Nicole Carponti knows just what to expect from her husband's tour of duty: loneliness, relentless worry, and a seemingly endless countdown until the moment Vic walks through the door again. But when the unthinkable happens, Nicole and Vic's bond is tested like never before and changes everything they believe to be true about the power of love and the simple beauty of being home for the holidays.

“You’re not serious.”
Carponti turned around, his shoulders covered in flecks of red hair. “What?”
Nicole grinned as she leaned against the door. “Garrison is going to kill you.”
“Garrison is going to love my new hair cut. It looks just like his.”
Nicole arched one blond eyebrow. “Except for the bright red fuzzy patch in the center of your head.”
Carponti shrugged and rubbed his hands over his freshly shorn scalp. “I can’t wait to see what the sergeant major says.”
“Isn’t he going to be mad?”
Carponti brushed the hair off his neck. “We’re going to war. My hair isn’t on the list of things he’s going to worry about.”
Nicole looked down at the pile of hair on the floor and sighed. “Then why do it?”
Carponti smirked. “Because it’ll get a rise out of him and I live to make his blood pressure go up.”
She laughed. “You need a hobby. Other than blowing things up.”
He sidled across the room and hooked his thumb into the waist of her jeans and tugged her close until their hips met. “I have a hobby. Keeping you well satisfied.”
She sniffed but her lips curled at the edges. “You’re going to be derelict in your duties for a while.”
“But I’ll be home soon enough and then I’ll make up for it.”
“I think I’m going to need a deployment boyfriend.”
He grinned wickedly. “Did you already get one?” He backed her up against the wall, his body hard against hers. God but she loved this man. “Can I see it?”
A slow flush crept over her face and she tried to look away. He threaded his fingers with hers and lifted her arms over her head. Her back arched with the movement.
“Please?” he whispered against her lips. “That would be an awesome memory to take with me downrange. Just think of me, alone in the middle of the desert. One visual of you with your deployment boyfriend and it could make a lonely night go by so much faster.”
Nicole giggled until the laugh overwhelmed her and she was gasping for air. He released her hands and she threaded them around his neck. She buried her face against his throat and laughed.
“There’s something really wrong with you,” she said when she could breathe again. “I’ll send you a video.”
He brightened instantly. “Really?”
“Yes. And dirty letters.”
“Promise?” He nibbled along the edge of her jaw, guiding her slowly backward toward their bed, stacked high with his two duffle bags and all the crap he still hadn’t packed.
But he didn’t care.
“I promise. And you’re going to be late.” Her voice caught in her throat.
“Screw it,” he whispered. “This is the last chance to make love to my beautiful wife before I have to go traipsing across the desert like Lawrence of Arabia.” He nibbled at her earlobe while his hand slipped down her belly to the moist head between her thighs. “Tell you what. You send me a picture of yours and I’ll send you a picture of mine. Maybe I can get him a little horse and saddle and send you a picture. Maybe a Barbie camel. I can put him in a little man dress.”
She laughed and Carponti’s heart swelled in his chest at the sound of it.
“I’m going to hold you to that.” She traced her fingers over his scalp, her body soft and warm against his erection. “I want a picture of him in a man dress in exchange for a video of the deployment boyfriend.”
Her legs bumped into the back of the bed and he followed her down. Tangled between the duffle bags and his uniforms, he made love to her one last time before he got on a plane and headed to war.

Excerpt

When I saw who was outside, my mouth dropped open.

Luckily, the doorbell buzzing stopped.

Unluckily, the last person on earth I wanted to see was standing outside my door.

Jesus, you don’t have a peephole?” Ham growled, looking incensed and Graham Reece looking, or worse, being incensed was a very bad thing. I’d learned that five months ago.

I didn’t have it in me to concern myself with Ham being incensed. I was more concerned with him being there at all.

To express this, I asked, “What the hell?”

Open the fuckin’ door, Zara.”

I stared a beat, then pulled myself together.

This was not happening.

We were done.

I pushed the door closed.

The problem with this was it didn’t work, seeing as the toe of Ham’s boot was wedged between it and the jamb.

Open the door, Zara,” he repeated.

We’re done,” I told him through the gap in the door. “Move your foot.”

Open the door.”

We’re done, Ham,” I snapped.

Right, then move back.”

What?”

He didn’t repeat his order. He moved his foot but only so he could rear back and plant his shoulder in the door.

The chain popped right open, as did the door, and I went flying.

I righted myself as Ham, now in my apartment, slammed the door.

You’re payin’ for that!” I yelled.

His eyes were beyond me, examining my new space as his mouth moved.

Not a problem. I’ll reimburse what they take out of your security deposit when we move you out of this dump.”

I didn’t know what he meant and I also didn’t care.

I switched subjects.

How did you get here so fast?” I asked, and his eyes finally came to me.

I hope to Christ you didn’t miss local gossip because you’re spendin’ your days at Deluxe Home Store and your nights at some titty bar.”

I’m not working at a titty bar, Ham, so you can stop concerning yourself with me and move on”—I paused—“again.” I bit off the last word then what he said penetrated and I asked, “What gossip?”

Managing The Dog, Zara, have been for a week. I live in Gnaw Bone.”

I felt my eyes get huge as my stomach clenched.

You’re managing The Dog?” I whispered, aghast.

Yeah. And you just got a new job. You start after you work out your notice at Deluxe,” he returned.

What?” This also came out quiet and horrified.

You’re waitressin’ for me. Shit hours but, if I remember correctly and since the view hasn’t changed except to get better, with your face, tits, and ass, great tips. In the meantime, we’re movin’ you out of this shithole and, you don’t got a girl who can take you on, you’re bunkin’ with me.”

Bunking with him?

Was he high?

I am not moving in with you,” I declared.

Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music and love was a good way to grow up.
And as she keeps growing up, it keeps getting better.

Ripping Pages by Rachel Rae

Sweet, shy and a bit goofy, Tinley Michaels has it all: a great mother, a wonderful, sexy, loving boyfriend, and her whole life ahead of her. One day her world is turned upside down when the love of her life suddenly leaves her without reason. She is left broken and vulnerable and vows to never let a man destroy her again. Months later, she decides to dust herself off and finally realize her dream of being a Broadway star. With nothing holding her back, she leaves everything she's ever known in Texas to start her new life in New York City. She moves in with her cousin, makes some great new friends, gets a steady job and an audition for a part in a small theater. Things are heading in the right direction.

Tinley isn’t looking for anyone. She is jaded but still hopelessly in love with her first love. That’s when, by chance, she meets Van Whitaker, the smooth talking sexy lead singer of the best-selling rock band, Ripping Pages. She labels him a man-whore/rock-n-roll douchebag immediately. Van tries to show her that he’s no longer that guy and that he sees something in Tinley worth trying to be better for. Even though he makes her feel things she’s only read about in the hundreds of romance novels she’s shamelessly addicted to, she is scared he will leave her even more broken than she already is. Should she give this gorgeous rock star the time of day? And what will she do when she comes face to face with her past and she must make a decision that will change her future and her forever?
What happens when the page you ripped from the book of your life suddenly tries to put itself back into the story?
Four Solid Stars

The magic of first love is our ignorance that can never end. ~ Benjamin Disraeli

I was a bit hesitant in picking up this book; it seemed to screamANGST! But something about it drew me in and once I started to read it, I honestly couldn’t stop. I actually read this in one day. As for the angst, it wasn’t as bad as I first pegged it to be. Yes, there was a love triangle of sorts, which I have a love/hate thing going on. I did love the whole hot Rockstar falling for the shy, unassuming heroine; yea, I’m a fan of these types of stories.

No reason.
No excuses.
He simply bailed on me.
What the hell.

Tinley’s life is completely turned upside down when her boyfriend, James, just up and leaves her with no warning whatsoever. He was Tinley’s first love and first everything. She was devastated and broken after he left, and her life was never the same again. After months of mourning the loss, she decides to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a Broadway star. So she moves to the Big Apple. With the help of her cousin, Tatum, she starts to acclimate herself into New York City life. Things were looking up for Tinley, especially when she keeps running into a certain sexy stranger; he’s a mystery, but something about him seems familiar and awakens a part of her that died when James left her.

He didn’t do romance, he fucked like a rock star and then sent you on your way.
What the hell was I thinking?

Van Whitaker is the leading singer of the rock band Ripping Pages. He’s the epitome of the typical Rock Star: Sexy, talented and is quite the womanizer. He’s intrigued with Tinley and knows there’s something different something about her. She’s not a groupie and she definitely seems like the relationship type. But does that deter his pursuit of her? Of course not. He’s Van-freaking-Whitaker. However, Tinley has other plans and she doesn’t make it easy. Van screams danger, and she knows better than to fall for him. But alas, as it always goes (and thank God for that), she does eventually give him a chance.

“You, Tinley, are my new beginning, and I love you more than anything. I’ve never felt this kind of love before. I’ve never felt the way I feel when you’re near me. You bring out the best in me. You make me want to be a good man for you. Just you.”

Things are looking up for Van and Tinley. They have a strong connection, and are very passionate about each other. However, things start to slowly fall apart when circumstances throws them curve ball after curve ball, especially when Tinley’s ex is suddenly back in her life. Oh what to do, what to do.

You are my ever after

This was such an entertaining read. I do love my bad boy rockers and Van was no different. The relationship between him and Tinley was pretty intense and when things take an unexpected turn, you feel their heartache. As far as the love-triangle goes, I did feel a little sympathy for both Van and James, but once secrets start to unravel, the choice between the two became pretty clear (though, for the record, I was Team Van all the way.) The angst was just enough to keep my emotions high, but low enough to not make me want to throw my iPad out the window. Definitely a good Rocker read.

Making Faces by Amy Harmon

Ambrose Young was beautiful. He was tall and muscular, with hair that touched his shoulders and eyes that burned right through you. The kind of beautiful that graced the covers of romance novels, and Fern Taylor would know. She'd been reading them since she was thirteen. But maybe because he was so beautiful he was never someone Fern thought she could have...until he wasn't beautiful anymore.

Making Faces is the story of a small town where five young men go off to war, and only one comes back. It is the story of loss. Collective loss, individual loss, loss of beauty, loss of life, loss of identity. It is the tale of one girl's love for a broken boy, and a wounded warrior's love for an unremarkable girl. This is a story of friendship that overcomes heartache, heroism that defies the common definitions, and a modern tale of Beauty and the Beast, where we discover that there is a little beauty and a little beast in all of us.
“If God made all our faces, did he laugh when he made me?

Does he make the legs that cannot walk and eyes that cannot see?

Does he curl the hair upon my head 'til it rebels in wild defiance?

Does he close the ears of a deaf man to make him more reliant?

Is the way I look a coincidence or just a twist of fate?

If he made me this way, is it okay, to blame him for the things I hate?

For the flaws that seem to worsen every time I see a mirror, for the ugliness I see in me, for the loathing and the fear.

Does he sculpt us for his pleasure, for a reason I can't see?

If God makes all our faces, did he laugh when he made me?

There were so many great lines and quotes in this story I was a highlighting fool wanting to remember them all!! I can honestly say this is one of my favorite books this year!!!

The first Amy Harmon book that I read was A Different Blue and I loved it so much that she pretty much became an auto buy or me. So when I saw this one out I was all over it!

I fell instantly in love with these characters. Fern Taylor in all of her ugly awkwardness, Bailey Sheen in all of his unique quirkiness and amazing outlook on the world, given his circumstances, and of course Ambrose Young with his beautiful face and body and even more beautiful heart!!

This is a story of growing up, discovering who you are and loving yourself and others no matter what the outside looks like. Being able to find the beauty and love in people that you may not see on the surface but believe me is there in spades!!

Fern has loved Ambrose since they were children and that love has never wavered. Even though Ambrose never really looked at Fern that way he knew she was around and genuinely liked her. Bailey and Fern are cousins and two peas in a pod. Bailey is confined to a wheelchair so Fern is his right hand gal for the most part. But they really are best friends first and foremost.

This story spans a long period of time. We start with the kids at the end of high school, although there are a lot of flashbacks to help the story along. As school ends Ambrose and his buddies move on and join the Army instead of going off to college and this is where we see Ambrose grow up fast!!

Oh, and I have to mention this all takes place during and the years after the attacks on 9/11. That plays a huge roll in this story as well.

I could go on and on and on, but I won’t! I will say YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK!! I MEAN IT!

This booked moved me like really great stories do, I know this because I was in a book funk for almost a week while these characters continued to live in my head. They won’t leave you easily, I swear!!

This is how my Ambrose & Fern now start everyday....not to spoil but there is a HEA!! I require it!! :)

FIVE++ STARS!!

If God makes all our faces, did he laugh when he made me?

Does he make the legs that cannot walk and eyes that cannot see?

Does he curl the hair upon my head ‘til it rebels in wild defiance?

Does he close the ears of the deaf man to make him more reliant?

I need a moment to catch my breath.

This story was absolutely beautiful.

Just. Beautiful.

Easily one of the best reads of the year.
My heart is in complete euphoria after all the emotions it went through. I ached, I loved, I smiled, I cried and after I read the words The End I felt…alive. No matter what curveballs life throws at you, you always have to believe that there is "a bigger purpose, a bigger picture that we only can contribute a very small piece to."

Is the way I look coincidence or just a twist of fate?

If he made me this way, is it okay, to blame him for the things I hate?

For the flaws that seem to worsen every time I see a mirror,

For the ugliness I see in me, for the loathing and the fear.

Fern

I absolutely love Fern. She’s one of the sweetest, most loyal, & most genuine heroines you’ll ever encounter. I cannot find one single mean thing to say about her. She’s not the prettiest girl and is often overlooked; almost like a wallflower. She’s so loving and loyal to her best friend, Bailey. The way she takes care of him, it makes her shine so brightly. When she loves someone, it’s real and it’s lasting. Bailey is a testament to that. As for Ambrose Young, well she’s loved him since they were young and he helped bury a spider (Yes, I admit, I cried at this part, too, and I'm not ashamed :) It didn’t matter if he was the best looking guy, or if his face was damaged beyond repair – she just loved…him.

Ambrose

Gorgeous, quiet, popular, yet reserved. He’s the star of the high school wrestling team. He’s far from cocky, and he is extremely smart. He’s got a full scholarship to Penn State after he graduates, but he wants a break from the pressures of being who he is. After the events of 9/11, he decides to join the Army and convinces his four closest friends to join with him. But when the time comes and the town is preparing for the return of the five boys, only Ambrose comes back alive – scarred and forever changed. He shuns any attention, only wanting to hide and be left alone. However, when he accidently runs into Fern, he’s left with mixed emotions. Gone is the awkward girl with glasses and untamed flaming red hair. In her place is a girl who’s unassumingly pretty. She turns his world upside down, especially when it becomes apparent that she doesn’t care about his scarred face.

Bailey

Oh Bailey, I don’t know how adequately describe how I feel about you. Life throws you a BIG curveball and no matter how many times you fall, your positive outlook in life is the stuff inspirations are made of. You make me want to live life to the fullest & be thankful for everything positive thing in my life. You are kind, loyal, loving & and your friendship with your cousin, Fern, is one of the strongest bonds I’ve ever read. You made me cry, both happy and sad tears, which as I type these words are threatening to spill again. I love you, Bailey. You are a true Hero in my book.

Does he sculpt us for his pleasure, for a reason I can’t see?

If God makes all our faces, did he laugh when he made me?

Just like Amy Harmon’s Running Barefoot, this story is utterly beautiful & perfectly written. It doesn’t have steam, but I couldn’t care less. The story is perfect just the way it is. I love all the relationships happening in the story. Fern & Bailey, Ambrose & his teammates - they were all so heartbreakingly real and emotional. And let's not forget the relationship between Fern & Ambrose. These two broken characters are so different, but are so alike; together they are sweet and so beautiful. I couldn’t put their story down. I was so sad when it was all over and will definitely be reading this again. Highly, HIGHLY recommend.

Favorite quotes

Fern had been reading romance since she was thirteen years old. She had fallen in love with Gilbert Blythe from “Anne of Green Gables” and was hungry to fall in love like that over and over again. (Ummm…this made me smile like a loon because I am EXACTLY the same way. I love Gilbert Blythe!)

“You are still beautiful,” Fern said softly, her face turned to his. He was quiet for a moment, be he didn’t pull away or groan or deny what she’d said.
“I think that statement is more a reflection of your beauty than mine”

He was a jock with a poet’s soul, and the heroes in Fern’s novels had nothing on him. Nothing.

“Ambrose Young! I have waited my whole life for you to want me. If you don’t hold me tight I won’t believe you mean it, and that’s worse than never being held at all. You’d better make me believe you mean it, Ambrose, or you will most definitely break me.”

Five Stars

Those of you that know me know all about my love for all thing Kristen Ashley. Now some I love a little more than others, but they are all simply varying degrees of love!

Jagged is no exception. The Colorado Mountain series holds a special place in my heart as it was my very first KA series. I popped by KA cherry on it if you will. :)

Jagged is the story of Graham Reese. Now we first met Graham in book one of The Burg series 'For You' - he was one of Feb's guys when she was traveling the roads. I am going to suggest that if you haven't, you should read 'For You' before this one.

Anyway, Graham, who goes by Ham, which is the only thing that I didn't like about this story. I hate that name. To me he is more of a Graham, but I digress. Graham is kind of a ramblin' man and has women all over. Now I know that sounds bad but they all know they are not his one and only and enjoy each other when he is in their town. Zara Cinders has loved Ham for a long time but ends this arrangement with Ham when she decides to get married, she knows he is not going to settle down so she tried to move on, and he accepts this. He doesn't like it but he accepts it.

Three years later all that changes. Zara is no longer married and barely making it and when Ham gets wind of this he high tails it back to her. Ham has a rough couple years(if you have read For You then you know what I'm talking about) and has realized life is to short not to go claim the woman he loves! And claim her he does in that fucking awesome KA Alpha way!

"Don't have a line to the devil, Ham." "Bullshit, babe. Somewhere along the line you made a deal with him. No woman who gives head the way you do hasn't sold her soul for that ability."

Lines like that make this classic Kristen Ashley. What I love most about these books is they make me laugh and cry and swoon over the yummy in your face Alpha's that she writes so well!
