Synopsis
I married the right brother.
At least that's what I tell myself at night, when I stare at the ceiling and listen to the rhythm of the grandfather clock down the hall. It never feels like the mere passage of time, but a countdown towards something inevitable. Bobby Lightly is selfish, irresponsible, and careless. I haven't seen him since the day I married his brother. He slipped out during the wedding reception without a word. A year later, I heard Bobby was drafted to Korea. He never said goodbye to anyone. Never sent a letter. We had all come to terms with the fact that he was probably dead somewhere, either a victim of the war or its aftermath. That is, until in the midst of an unrelenting heatwave, he showed up at the doorstep of the house I lived in with his brother. Everyone thinks I'm cruel. Everyone thinks I should be easy on him. They think I don't understand him. They all think I hate him. But what no one understands is that it was Bobby who broke my heart. And I think he’s back to do it again.
Excerpt
“What do you want me to do?” I yelled frustratedly. “Pack my bags and go to India? Life’s not that easy. We’re not all you. We don’t all just walk away from our responsibilities.” I immediately regretted those last words, recalling the scar on his shoulder. There were some responsibilities Bobby faced when others would have run. “It’s not about what I want you to do, Lil. What do you want?” What I wanted was no longer relevant. It was too late for what I wanted. “You keep taking that shit and one day you are going to wake up and realize you slept your whole life away. There may be people who need that, but you are not one of them. Let yourself feel it all. The good. The bad. The fucking great. Don’t imprison yourself.” I knew he was right, but I had grown comfortable in the numbness. Yet there was something luxurious about the pain I felt upon Bobby’s return. It was rich and textured. I could feel it in my bones and my chest and on my skin. I could taste it. I could feel again. And feeling the pain also gave me room to feel alive. “If you keep doing this, how are you any different than Rory? We want to get him better, right? Well the changes start with us. I’m back and trust me, that wasn’t easy for me. And now you’ve gotta bring yourself back.” I swallowed sharply, preparing myself to say goodbye to my dear friend. A friend who had always been there. More than my sister, or mother, or Barbie could be. It understood my fears, my insecurities, the things I had sacrificed. It knew my secrets. I never had to explain myself to it. It never judged. “Fine,” I surrendered. But I clutched the bottle tighter in my hands than ever before. Bobby’s body language relaxed as he glanced over to me and opened his palm. “Gimme.” “What? Now you want ‘em?” “Don’t be an ass, Lil.” I sneered at Bobby, slamming the bottle in his palm. The pills tried to seduce me one last time as I heard them dance in their container.

Holly's Favorite Reads of 2014

(In no particular order)

DIRTY ANGELS (Dirty Angels #1)
by Karina Halle
***WARNING*** This book deals with drug cartels and as such it contains a lot of sex and violence and some violent sex. It can get pretty ugly, pretty dark and pretty crazy. There is drug use, abuse, a bit of torture and dubious consent. The hero is not a hero and the villains...well, they're even worse. If this sort
of thing bothers you, PLEASE DO NOT READ IT. This ain't no cupcake farting unicorn kind of book. If you are even a bit squeamish about violence, brutality and rape, this is your warning to stay away from a book that you certainly will not like (and why read books that you know you won't like?)***
Enough said, right??

THE STORY OF US (CARNAGE #1)
by Lesley Jones
ASTONISHING, BREATHTAKING, EXTRAORDINARY, BRILLIANT, INCREDIBLE, MAGNIFICENT....THESE ARE JUST A FEW WORDS THAT COME TO MIND WHEN I THINK ABOUT THIS STORY, AND I AM NOT KIDDING WHEN I TELL YOU I CAN'T STOP THINKING ABOUT IT!!!
This was probably the BIGGEST book hangover of the year for me!! All I can say is READ IT!!

THE EVER TRILOGY

INSIDIOUS (Tales from the Dark Side #1)
by Aleatha Romig
I love ‘em dark and twisted and Oh Yeah! This one totally fits the bill. Aleatha Romig is a Queen of Mind Fuckery, and to that I say…THANK YOU!

CLIPPED WINGS & INKED ARMOR

These came highly recommended to me by a dear friend who knows what a sucker I am for a tattooed, pierced bad boy and IT WAS FANTASTIC!!

ETERNALLY NORTH
by Tillie Cole
This was my very first Tillie Cole book and I was instantly in love!! Tudor North is delicious!!

IT AIN’T ME BABE (Hades Hangmen #1)
by Tillie Cole
What I love most about Tillie Cole is that she can write with such amazing diversity! She can write a beautifully sweet story like Eternally North and then this AWESOME biker/cult gem that was one of the best things I read all year!!

NINE MINUTES (Nine Minutes #1)
by Beth Flynn
This was a very different type of biker story, I think – but if you are a fan of the biker stories and you aren’t squeamish, then I highly recommend this one!

UNDERESTIMATED & UNDERESTIMATED TOO
by Jettie Woodruff
This was my first book(s) by Ms Woodruff and HOLY SHIT did I have massive book hangover!! These books are dark, twisted and have several ‘Oh Hell No!’ moments! I mean seriously, how can you resist a warning like this….Warning! This is not your everyday fall in love romance. This book contains disturbing situations, strong language, graphic, sexual content - some forced, some not. If it's a happily ever after love story that you are looking for, you should probably move on. If you are up for the ride, stick around and it may just turn into a love story after all.

PUDDLE JUMPING
by Amber L Johnson
“I don’t believe there’s such a thing as conventional love. Love is bending. Love is breaking. Love is constantly learning about the other person until you go crazy because it will never be perfect, but there’s no fault in trying. I’ve loved a boy who was extraordinary beyond words, in my eyes.” I FUCKING LOVED THIS BEAUTIFUL BOOK!! HARD!!

THERAPY
by Kathryn Perez
Accepting the ugly shit in life is just part of living. Pain tells us we are still here; it lets us know we've survived. Phenomenal story! Some parts were a little hard to read but excellent and incredibly emotional!

PUSH (Push #1)
by Claire Wallis
I wasn’t really sure what to make of this book when I finished it, I just kind of sat there for awhile letting it all soak in. I’m still not sure I can accurately describe my feelings for this story other than to tell you that it gave me almost a week-long book hangover! Oh, and that I can’t wait for book two.

TRANSCENDENCE
by Shay Savage
This book has the award for most unique – I had my doubts about a story about a caveman but it was FANTASTICALLY AMAZING and caused another major book hangover.

SOCIOPATH
by Lime Craven
I truly love me a great anti-hero and that is exactly what you get with Aeron Lore! I loved him, loved the writing and can honestly say this book alone has made Lime Craven and auto buy author for me!

Deliver (Deliver #1) by Pam Godwin
Shock has a way of rousing attention.
This story had a lot of twists and surprises. It amazed me that the plot was so mercifully crafted to make this a very engaging read. (Full Review)
Archer's Voice  (A Sign of Love #4) by Mia Sheridan
Archer Hale’s voice was one of the most beautiful things in the whole wide world. The Hero in this book floored me. Archer made me a swoony mess.

The Dark Light of Day by T.M. Frazier
A revenge kill is the best kind of kill.
But a revenge kill for your family, with your woman's permission?
That's borderline erotic.

Is it wrong to be completely turned upside down and turned on by that? Yea. This book has made an utter mess of me and I'm one happy girl because of it. (Full Review)

Love, in English (Love, in English #1) by Karina Halle
I liked the calm Mateo, the witty Mateo, the lusty Mateo, and the hot-tempered Mateo.
I liked all of him.
No. I loved all of him.
I loved Mateo Casalles.

I am utterly FLOORED by this book. This was STUNNING! As I sit here trying to write this review, I’ve had a few hours to reflect. I’m having trouble finding the adequate words to describe this story. The first words that come to mind are immediately: Beautiful, heartbreaking, conflicting & sweet. (Full Review)

Sweet Rome (Sweet Home #2) by Tillie Cole
“I like the way you are with me. I like me when I’m with you. I feel like I could tell you anything, that I could bear my fuckin’ black soul. You make me feel… well… you know… You get me?”
I don’t think I’ve said it enough, so saying it one more time isn’t going to hurt:
I love you, Romeo Prince…so, so much. (Full Review)

Sweet Fall (Sweet Home #3) by Tillie Cole
“Why the war paint, Pix?”
“Because I can’t stand the girl underneath,” she whispered
“Why the tattoos?” Lexi asked
“Because I can’t bear seeing the scars of my past.”

This story, my God, this story…
This was not an easy read. This was emotional, raw and truly heartbreaking. Yes, this is a love story, but it was so much more than boy meets girl and fall in love. Oh no…it was so much more than that.

This is NOT your typical MC story. Oh, no. There are so many other elements that make it stand out.

Please be warned – This is a bit on the darker and edgier side, but that just makes it even more unique. This is phenomenal!! (Full Review)

“Hoh!”
I have NEVER, EVER read anything like this before. I’m so amazed at what this author was able to accomplish with this book. I’ve read historical romances before, but pre-historic romance?? I had my doubts, but no more, at least when it comes to Shay Savage’s books.

Black Lies by Alessandra Torre
“I’m worried I’ll fuck you so well I’ll ruin you for life.”
God, I know it was wrong. But in the face of recent events, I closed my eyes to reason.
I liked it. I wanted it. I wanted it to fuck me.
Two words can basically sum up this book: Fucking brilliant. (Full Review)

The Fault in our Stars by John Green
I LOVE YOU, AUGUSTUS!
What a slut time is. She screws everybody.
I do not like sad books, but I do not regret reading this. I’m so thankful for having met Augustus and Hazel. They felt so real and they’ve made such a huge impact on me. My emotions were all over the place and I swear and I have never cried over a character as much as I did over Augustus. (Full Review)

Nine Minutes by Beth Flynn
“A story about a man who has loved me from the very beginning, from the first glance. The man who always was and still is my soul mate. That’s the only love story now.”

My head is still spinning. And just when I think it the rollercoaster was over, I entered another tunnel and was thrust into a whole new are-you-fucking-kidding-me! moment.
