BLOCKED

By Jennifer Lane

New Adult Contemporary/Sports Romance

Released October 21, 2014

College freshman Lucia Ramirez has a secret crush on Dane Monroe. He’s a tall drink of water — blond, brash, and one hell of a volleyball player. Hijole. Lucia hopes her volleyball scholarship to his school will make him notice her.

Too bad what’s noticeable is Dane’s obvious hatred for Lucia. Her family’s politics contradict everything he stands for. And politics are front and center in both their families. Dane’s mother is about to face Lucia’s father in the race for US President.

When Secret Service throws them together, Dane can’t deny his frustrating attraction to Lucia’s athletic curves and sweet faith in the world. Amid the intense pressure of college athletics and presidential politics, can opposites not just attract, but overcome overwhelming odds to be together? Or do their differences block their match from the start?

Writing Blocked

Lucia opened the door. "They say not to discuss politics and religion on the first date."

“Well, then.” I gave her a huge smile. “We’re screwed.”

~*~

Has a political opinion on social media ever made your blood boil? Have you struggled to tolerate friends’ opposing political views? There’s a bitter political divide in many countries, including the US, and those polarized philosophies inspired the story of Blocked.

Heroine Lucia Ramirez and hero Dane Monroe view the world in opposite ways but are thrown together as their parents compete for the US presidency. Underhanded national politics are hardly the place for a trusting relationship to begin, but can love bridge the gap of mistrust and hatred?

The theme of forbidden love intrigues me. Lucia’s conservative father, the Republican nominee for US President, would be horrified to learn of his daughter’s crush on his liberal opponent’s son Dane. Dane and his mother, the Democratic nominee for US President, believe that harsh conservative ideals thwart the American dream.

One lesson from my psychology career is that perception is reality. Democrats see the world quite differently from Republicans, and both groups are hell-bent on proving they’re right. Dane wants equality for all. Lucia stands for individual responsibility. Which philosophy is better? Which will persevere in the next election?

Sometimes, political discussion becomes heated. It gets ugly. In contrast, I tried my hardest to present each viewpoint fairly in this story. Readers and editors from both sides of the aisle critiqued the manuscript, and one reason I self-published the novel was to preserve a delicate balance of political views between Dane and Lucia.

Despite their political differences, Lucia and Dane share one thing in common: volleyball. Both are scholarship volleyball players at a top university, vying to earn a spot on the US national team one day. In addition to swimming, I played volleyball at a small college, and my love for this sport bleeds onto the pages. To smash a perfectly set volleyball down the opponent’s throat? There’s nothing more satisfying. And the closeness of a team is one of life’s special pleasures, experienced by Lucia and Dane.

I hope you enjoy the political and sport elements in Blocked.  ~Jennifer Lane

Release Blitz ~ The CONduct series by Jennifer Lane Exclusive Extra Scene + #Giveaway

Today we are excited to present an exclusive extra scene from Jennifer Lane's The CONduct Series!

This particular scene follows the conclusion of On Best Behavior:

Grant Madsen and Sophie Taylor take their nephew Ben Barberi on a college visit.

Sophie: I guess Notre Dame’s not bad, Grant. I mean, it’s no Northwestern…

Grant: Not bad? How can you so easily dismiss the beauty of the University of Notre Dame? The Basilica? The Golden Dome? (He points up as they walk across the quad.) They’re stunning!

Ben: Relax, Uncle Grant. You can rag on Northwestern when we visit Sophie’s alma mater next.

Sophie: You better not! We have some beautiful buildings, too.

Grant: But no Touchdown Jesus.

Ben: Or First Down Moses.

Sophie: (Rolls eyes) I can’t believe how football and religion go hand in hand here. Blasphemy.

Grant: We Catholics know how to poke fun at ourselves. Take this statue, here. (Points straight ahead) This is Jesus, of course, with the famous Bible verse about ‘come to me all who are weary’. Now, look up to the top of the dome. See the Virgin Mary up there? And look back at the Jesus statue. See how his arms are outstretched as he looks up at his mother?

Ben: Yeah. What’s the deal?

Grant: We refer to this statue as ‘Jump mama, I’ll catch you.’

Sophie: (Laughs) Okay, I gotta admit I like that one. (Eyes Grant) Almost as much as I love you in that sexy uniform.

Grant: C’mon, you’ve seen me wear my khakis for months now.

Sophie: It never gets old, McSailor. I bet you were adorable as an undergrad, with your cute Navy uniform...

Ben: You guys said you wouldn’t do that! Gross.

Sophie: Oh, Ben. When you get your ROTC scholarship, you’ll be in uniform, too. The girls will be all over you.

Grant: Ooh, don’t let your girlfriend Lindsay hear that.

Ben: Yeah, she’d kill me. Are we gonna visit the ROTC building next?

Grant: First I want to stop at the grotto.

Ben: What’s that?

Grant: It’s a rocky cave where you can light a candle and say a prayer. A real spiritual place I used to visit when I was in school here.

Sophie: (Scoops Grant’s hand in hers) I bet you lit many candles for your mom.

Grant: (Looks down). You know me well. But today…today I thought we could light a candle for your dad, Ben. (Ben is quiet.) He’d be real proud you’re off to college soon.

Sophie: To Logan. (Squeezes Ben’s shoulder)

Ben: Okay, I guess. (They head to the grotto.)

Sophie: And after the grotto and ROTC, let’s return to the hotel. To our rooms. Our separate rooms.

Grant: Bom-chicka-bom.

Ben: Gross!

How fun was that scene? Grant and Sophie's story touched my heart while reading the entire series! Check out my reviews HERE.

4.0 - 4.5 Stars

An entertaining, engaging read!

I've been eyeing this series for a while now. I was intrigued with the summary, and was curious to find out how a relationship between two convicts who meet outside their parole officer's door would fare. Well, I'm glad to say that With Good Behavior was absolutely entertaining for me!

Meet Sophie Taylor and Grant Madsen. Both are good people who made seriously bad decisions that landed them each in prison. Each served their time and now must try to move on with their lives. They meet while meeting with their parole officer, and the story really picks up from there!

With a cast of rich, likable, and well-developed characters, With Good Behavior is way more than a story of organized crime. Grant is charming, honorable, protective, and was raised to be a good man. However, unfortunate circumstances and influences keep him tied to the mafia family that he wants nothing to do with. Through flashbacks, Jennifer Lane does a fantastic job at setting up the back story. It is tragic and abusive. She explores various types of dysfunctional family relationships. For instance, she fleshes out the relationships between father-son, father-daughter and brother-brother all while creating a plot that is thoroughly emotional and engaging. You'll root for Sophie and Grant right from the beginning, both individually and as a couple.

One of the things I really enjoyed was the setting of Chicago! Ms. Lane paints an enticing picture of The Windy City from the beautiful buildings to even the Cubs/Sox rivalry. Who knew taking an architectural cruise down the river would be so exciting! I truly appreciated all these details.

This is my first time reading anything from Jennifer Lane. For the most part, I found With Good Behavior to be a solid 4 stars. I found her writing to flow smoothly, and she knows how to keep the plot moving, even splashing humor here and there. Really, I couldn't tear myself away from the story. It was quite a page-turner for me! I think that earns an extra half star. I'm really glad I took the time to read book 1 of the Conduct series.

Four Stars

My book journey takes me to Chicago again for more of my favorite ex-cons, Grant and Sophie! While the first book showed where the romance began for these two, Bad Behavior centers on our lovable couple working on their issues. Through couples counseling, the emotions fly high as old scars resurface.  It’s a good thing that their psychologist is so patient and caring. I gotta love Dr. Hunter Hayes as he helps them tackle their demons head on.  Grant, especially, had a huge mountain to climb, since being the son of an abusive Mafioso boss left such deep scars.

Although the therapy sessions are good portion of this book, I think one of the highlights is the relationship Grant has with his teenage nephew. Ben is at an impressionable age, and Grant wants so much for him to not be pulled into the mafia life. He’s confused and hurting after all that went down with his father, Logan. The decisions Ben makes all add to the tension. Really, he has become one of my favorites in this series.

This book has less suspense than the first book, but the suspense that goes down pretty much unfolds spectacularly!

Four Stars

After having read book 2, I couldn’t resist diving deep into the final book of this series to see how it all concludes for Grant and Sophie!  Grant takes on the Russian mafia as he goes undercover with the FBI. Oh boy!

First, I want to mention that Grant’s undercover name made me giggle every time it came up, LOL!  This installment very much showcases Grant and Sophie happy together and hard at work moving on living life after getting out of prison. All the happiness could be thwarted though if the Russians have any say in the matter. While Grant works hard to gain the trust of the Russian mafia, his nephew, Ben, finds a friend in Sophie, and they bond over their love for the sport of swimming. I loved this part of the story. Ben is such a great character. I’ve enjoyed his character growth throughout the entire series. This time he’s the one on Dr. Hunter Hayes’ couch. As for Grant and Sophie, let’s just say that being forced to be apart can make for nice, steamy encounters!

I love that Jennifer Lane can write really awesome antagonists. Mullens was quite a sleezy character! By the third book I know that she deliciously builds up the suspense. Once it all starts rolling, Ms. Lane has a way of always surprising you with great twists. I was expecting that this time, and she did not disappoint in the least. I’m so sad to have reached the end of this series as I have thoroughly enjoyed this ride. Thank you, Jennifer Lane, for introducing me to Grant and Sophie!
